Mission Focus

Today was fun for me . . . I poured my rather portly self into a mini-van full of orphan children on their way to school. The mini-van which was designed for about 12 people, held 26 in a way that would make contortionists look twice.

I sat in front with six children and my video camera as the driver used his ambivalence to the chaos around him to further both terrify me and strengthen my faith.

At the school I was to film the children in their classrooms, highlighting the children whose lives we are featuring in our film. It was fun to stand in assembly with them as they saluted the Sri Lankan flag and sang a stirring rendition of their national anthem. Stirring, because it started slow and sounding sort of foreign, before it finished in a flurry with a tune strangely reminiscent of "YMCA".

We interviewed more children today, and got a chance to hear the vision of the Executive Director as well. One first from today was placing the camera on the able shoulder of the youngest member of our crew . . . Rachel. She did an admirable job filming construction work, the Vacation Bible School, and assorted shots around the orphanage.
